Care for Young Sailors

Generations of young people have learned to sail in safety at the ICC. Our resident Members' Representatives on Egremont are available 24 hours a day during cadet weeks. Our instructing and housekeeping staff of about 30 gives a staff to pupil ratio of 1:2 aboard. Your children are safe to enjoy themselves to the full. Should you wish to see our Safety Policy Document please ask for a copy.

Safety, Supervision & Care

Our commitment to safety is paramount. We regularly review and test safety procedures including arrangements for the welfare of children in our care.

  • We take every practical step to ensure that all those in our care will be safe and secure both on and off the water.
  • As a recognised sailing school we are inspected annually by the Royal Yachting Association.
  • We are inspected by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority and hold a License for sailing, open canoeing, windsurfing, rock climbing and abseiling.
  • On courses a qualified instructor is always in close proximity.
  • References and CRB check are required for all our staff.
  • RYA recommended Pupil to instructor ratios are strictly adhered to.
  • Rescue boats carry first aid kits and associated emergency equipment.
  • All Group Leaders carry a VHF radio.
  • All instructional staff are qualified in first aid.
  • We insist that everyone who is sailing, aboard rescue boats or on the pontoons, wear buoyancy aids or life jackets.
  • Head-protecting helmets are provided for beginners on cadet sailing courses and are available for all sailors if requested or if weather conditions dictate a requirement.
  • All safety equipment is regularly checked.
